Needs A Style Do-Over For 2013

Katie Holmes’ sense of style may have been compromised in 2012 by her rather turbulent divorce from Tom Cruise—and from Scientology. But there are no excuses in the game of fashion, and there’s no better time than the New Year for this star to launch a sartorial revamp.
She has a propensity for dressing way beyond her 34 years, in looks that are too mature, sometimes slouchy and ill-fitting, and, daresay, even drab and frumpy.
Occasionally, Katie pulls off a good stare-worthy statement (her Elie Saab confection at the 2012 Vanity Fair Oscar party was divine), but too often there’s a mom-jeans vibe clouding the picture.
She needs to take a cue from her sugar-sweet, six-year-old daughter, Suri, and dress more youthfully.
There’s no question Katie is a natural beauty and has an eye for fashion; she’s the first celebrity face for Bobbi Brown cosmetics and co-represents her own Holmes & Yang collection, after all.
Plus, she’s the perfect hanger with a dynamite post-divorce “revenge” body working for her. Now, she just could use a better closet and a concentrated effort to embrace more elevated fashion—or maybe she just needs a good stylist.

Just Like the French Say: "Be Comfortable In Your Own Skin!"

Self Portrait: Ask Me Why I Took This Picture--A Pretty Girl Does It Her Way!...
This post originally appeared on Stella Boonshoft's Tumblr, The Body Love Blog. Brandon, founder of the photo blog Humans of New York, recently met and talked to Stella and published the portrait and Stella's post on the organization's Facebook page, where it got 270,000 likes, nearly 10,000 shares and over 26,000 comments in 14 hours. You might also be interested in reading Stella's thoughts on the origins of her body image issues and her response to all of the attention her first post has received.
WARNING: Picture might be considered obscene because subject is not thin. And we all know that only skinny people can show their stomachs and celebrate themselves. Well I'm not going to stand for that. This is my body. Not yours. MINE. Meaning the choices I make about it, are none of your f*cking business. Meaning my size, IS NONE OF YOUR F*CKING BUSINESS.
If my big belly and fat arms and stretch marks and thick thighs offend you, then that's okay. I'm not going to hide my body and my being to benefit your delicate sensitivities.

stella

This picture is for the strange man at my nanny's church who told me my belly was too big when I was five.

This picture is for my horseback riding trainer telling me I was too fat when I was nine.
This picture is for the girl from summer camp who told me I'd be really pretty if I just lost a few pounds
This picture is for all the f*cking stupid advertising agents who are selling us cream to get rid of our stretch marks, a perfectly normal thing most people have (I got mine during puberty)
This picture is for the boy at the party who told me I looked like a beached whale.
This picture is for Emily from middle school, who bullied me incessantly, made mocking videos about me, sent me nasty emails, and called me "lard". She made me feel like I didn't deserve to exist. Just because I happened to be bigger than her. I was 12. And she continued to bully me via social media into high school.
MOST OF ALL, this picture is for me. For the girl who hated her body so much she took extreme measures to try to change it. Who cried for hours over the fact she would never be thin. Who was teased and tormented and hurt just for being who she was.
I'm so over that.
THIS IS MY BODY, DEAL WITH IT.

A Historical Paris Fashion Week (Take a Look Back)

Finale at Dior Spring/Summer 2013 show | Source: Nowfashion.com
Today, Jessica Michault, editor-in-chief of Nowfashion.com, shares her thoughts on the Paris Fashion Week collections.
PARIS, France — Each season, as the international fashion flock winds its way from New York to London to Milan, there is usually a gradual yet perceptible build up of excitement for what comes last: Paris Fashion Week. After all, it’s here in the City of Light where the best and brightest designers from around the world come to show their collections. It’s here that the season’s fashion trends finally crystallise. And of course, Paris is home to the industry’s most powerful fashion houses and luxury groups.
This season, the buzz was anything but gradual. From the very first day of New York Fashion Week, there was the loud and ceaseless hum of discussion about the impending ‘battle royale’ between two of the top names in the fashion industry, Raf Simons and Hedi Slimane, who were set to show their debut ready-to-wear collections for Dior and the recently rebranded Saint Laurent, respectively, each owned by competing luxury conglomerates LVMH and PPR.
Many argued that this Paris Fashion Week would change the fashion world as we know it; that something new was about to be born. Well, the fashion world may have changed, but it did so with a whimper, not with a bang.

Dior Spring/Summer 2013 | Source: Nowfashion.com
At Dior, Raf Simons produced a beautiful collection that deconstructed the brand’s famous Bar jacket from Christian Dior’s iconic 1947 New Look collection. The show was utterly modern in the way Simons incorporated colourful, high-tech and iridescent fabrics, as well as unusual embellishments, into rounded womanly shapes that looked deceptively simple, but illustrated the designer’s tailoring prowess.
Though much of this collection covered similar territory to what Simons explored in his haute couture show in July, that is to be expected, as ready-to-wear should trickle down from couture. But happily, there was also some of Simons’ own minimalist aesthetic at play. He was less reserved with his silhouettes and dared to experiment more freely with the codes of the house. Still, there wasn’t that same excitement of discovering a completely new sartorial universe.
Over at Saint Laurent, surprise was the name of the game. The entire industry was kept in the dark, quite literally, about Hedi Slimane’s debut collection for the house until the first wide brim hat-wearing model took to the catwalk in a pitch black showspace in the rafters of the Grand Palais.

Here, again, there was a mélange between the legendary past of an iconic brand and the style of a new designer. But the balance was off and the show tipped too far towards an homage to the history of the house, and failed to illuminate a new path for the brand to travel in future. It didn’t help that the collection was dominated by only two silhouettes — the classic YSL tuxedo and 70′s style caftans — which provided a rather confined framework.
But if the clash of the titans failed to unfold as many had hoped, that didn’t mean that Paris Fashion Week was a disappointment. Far from it.
A number of brands showed incredibly strong collections this season. Dries van Noten’s ode to the 1990s Seattle grunge movement revealed a designer at the peak of his creative talents. Alber Elbaz’s Asia-inspired Lanvin collection, which used the concept of molding and folding flat pieces of fabric to create angular yet sensual clothing, gave the house a strong new direction to follow.
The return of Phoebe Philo, after the birth of her third child, proved that the designer has still got her finger firmly on the pulse of what the modern woman wants. With Jil Sander back at the helm of her eponymous brand, known for its minimalist aesthetic, as well as a broad shift in fashion towards the kind of minimalism Philo has championed since taking the creative reins at Céline, the designer pushed her unassuming style in a slightly different direction. That is to say, she loosened up a bit, using flowing silks and choosing to leave hemlines raw and knitwear frayed. As for those ironic accessories, they pointed to a woman who was finally letting her wicked sense of humour show.
Dries van Noten Spring/Summer 2013 | Source: Nowfashion.com
Haider Ackermann’s darkly poetic show revealed a designer right in the middle of sartorial exploration, as the fashion world closely watches his every move. Meanwhile, the maestro Karl Lagerfeld showed himself to be firmly above the fashion fray with a collection that was both youthful and wearable. On a catwalk adorned with enormous wind turbines, Lagerfeld sent out ensembles that were more restrained than usual. Focusing on proportion, he created comfortable A-line dresses as well as modern-looking outfits that featured fitted dresses underneath cropped tops.
What all of these shows have in common is that they were not only designer-driven, but commercially viable. In each case, the clothing in these collections could have walked right off the runway and into the wardrobes of modern women without commercial adaptation.
Another major highlight of Paris was evidence on the runways that a new generation of fashion designers is starting to establish itself in a significant way. The catwalk shows of Cédric Charlier, Anthony Vaccarello and Chitose Abe — the designer behind the brand Sacai — were all fully formed; well conceived and expertly executed. Each of these designers has brought a fresh new voice to fashion and proves that Paris is still a hotbed of emerging designer creativity.

11 Ways To Cut Down Morning Hairstyling Time

When you’re a woman on the go, you don’t have time to style your hair all morning. Here’s a list of some easy shortcuts to make hairstyling a snap, especially when you’ve only got 5 minutes to get it done!
  1. Easy volume: Before going to bed, spritz volumizing spray over wet hair, then wrap it into a loose bun at the top of your head and secure it with bobby pins. Let it down in the morning and your hair will be full of bouncy volume – no effort needed.
  2. No-heat waves: Before bed, apply mousse to wet hair from roots to ends. Braid hair into two pigtails on either side of your head, starting at the middle of the hair. In the morning, just unwind the braids and you’ll have easy, beachy waves.
  3. Preemptive frizz control: Before bed, apply leave-in conditioner to wet hair and comb it through the ends. Part your hair into two pigtails, and then divide each side into three sections. Create a pin curl with each section by starting at the roots and winding it around two fingers. Secure each pin curl to your scalp with a clip. In the morning, just unclip and soften the curls, and you’ll have sleek locks.
  4. Moisturize: Your hair will be much more manageable if it’s well-hydrated. Save yourself some time by using a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. If your hair is prone to tangles, use a wide-tooth comb to detangle it in the shower. Follow up with a leave-in conditioner if your hair is extra dry and hard to manage.
  5. Treat coarse hair: Make coarse hair easier to style by using a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo to cleanse it and condition it often. Extra conditioner will help restore moisture – which makes your hair more cooperative when you’re styling it in a hurry.
  6. Limp hair booster: If you have fine, limp hair, getting the right haircut can eliminate styling time. A bob with defined edges gives your hair more volume and doesn’t require excessive maintenance, so it’s like having pre-styled hair!
  7. Natural texture: A quick way to style your hair and go is by using a product that enhances your hair’s natural texture. Apply a quick coat of texturizing spray or shine spray that will work with your hair, rather than against it. Going with your natural texture will make styling a piece of cake.
  8. Don’t overstyle: Your hairstyle doesn’t need to be flawless. Try wrapping your hair into a quick, messy bun at the top of your head and securing it with bobby pins. This look can be done in a snap but is still elegant.
  9. Easy blowout: Go to bed with wet hair pulled into a ponytail. In the morning, your hair should still be damp. Then, blow dry your damp hair until it’s completely dry. It takes much less time than usual, but looks like a perfect, voluminous blowout!
  10. Quick flatiron: Instead of spending time sectioning and straightening your whole head of hair with a flatiron, just straighten the strands around your face. This will give you a polished look, without involving all the time and work.
  11. Sleek ponytail: The ponytail is a standard last-minute hairstyle, but you can make yours look polished with a few quick touches. First, start off with a deep side part. Then pull all your hair to the back, using a touch of hairspray to keep it sleek. Secure the ponytail low and wrap an extra strand of hair around the hairband – this is the trick for turning a common ponytail into a polished one!

The Fashions of Kanye West (a review)

We weren’t at Kanye West’s show today, but in this age of Twitter, you almost don’t have to be anywhere anymore–just follow a few well-placed people and you’re all set. Plus it’s fun to piece it all together, sort of like a scavenger hunt.
So, here goes:
1) Several tweeters noted that the rather cavernous space was pretty empty close to show time, which was 930pm in Paris. @BritishVogue tweeted: “Kanye’s show ominously empty. Might go home + make up a report based on rumour+lies for fun #pfw” Elle‘s Joe Zee tweeted: “Crazy door scene at @KanyeWest show but inside, there’s a quiet anticipation. Show starting soon. Buckle up kids.”
2) But there were definitely a few notables there: Kim Kardashian (who tweeted a pic of those $6,000 Kanye shoes), Diddy, Jay-Z, Big Sean, Azealia Banks,Cassie and Alicia Keys were all there. But that’s quite a different crowd than the fashion insider-y one that showed up last season to support him. (Except for the now unemployed Stefano Pilati, who we spotted in one lone front row picture.) UPDATE: Getty incorrectly identified Riccardo Tisci as Stefano Pilati. The plot thickens…
3) Oh, and Anna Wintour sat next to Andre Leon Talley, who appeared to be wearing velour pants and Uggs. A quick review of today’s Getty showed that he’s been wearing them all over Paris. We’re not sure what to make of this development, but will be watching Vogue carefully for Ugg editorial placements.
4) Karlie Kloss and Carmen Kass walked the show.
5) There were only 20 looks, so no one can accuse him of not editing well.
6) There was a lot of leather, an enormous fur backpack, and something that looked like a cross between a whip/leash/riding crop/long belt.
7) The shoes were mesh and on the most spindly heels ever, and the boots featured straps that we have to admit looked kinda badass.

8) There were go-karts both during the finale and at the after party. Super hot pic of model Anne V at after party with Kanye, tweeted by her at right.
9) Azealia Banks, Common, Big Sean, and Mos Def all performed at the after party, prompting Azealia to tweet: “That was the most fun I’ve had this year! @kanyewest”
10) And the first review is in. The NYT‘s Eric Wilson had quite a bit to say, and it wasn’t great. He pointed out that the front row (see number 2 above) “gives some idea of the target customer he has in mind for a collection that seemed desperately trying to project both an aura of coolness and easy availability.” It didn’t get much better from there. Kanye was supposed to do a preview for the press, but decided to cancel it last minute…while Wilson was already in the showroom. “‘I don’t know about this,” Kanye said said. “I got treated unfairly by the press last time. Why would I want to do this?’” And then he kicked Wilson out. Wilson watched the show objectively, but pointed out the “questionable fur looks” and that “Mr. West’s approach to making a dress was like a cook wrapping leftover turkey.” (He DID like an oversized sweatshirt, however.)

The Amazing Wax Figure of Sir Karl Lagerfeld!

Which one is Wax Karl?

File this one under: What took them so long? Karl Lagerfeld’s likeness has graced everything from Diet Coke cans to tiny fragrance sponges, so it’s about time someone made a life-sized version of him that serves absolutely no purpose except allowing fans to stand there and admire it. Now there’s a dedicated place where you can do this.

That place is the Panoptikum museum in Hamburg, Germany. According to a press release, it took sculptor Saskia Ruth almost a year to create the Kaiser in all his waxy glory; she was particularly focused on his typical facial expression, his clothes and his hairstyle. The museum, which is 130 years old, unveiled the wax statue last week, so he’s there now for your viewing pleasure. We can only hope that Ruth is working on a wax Choupette to accompany Karl.
Do you think this is a prototype for a secret Karl Klone army?

How to show your "Alabama" school spirit...

I know buying t-shirts was never a spectator sport, so to speak.  Usually when a shopper wants to have some t-shirts they look for cut, length, color and embellishments.  Normally, this is a great way to celebrate summer and be treated like the person you want to become.  If it's a shopper's ultimate goal to remain in college and become a graduate, then, hopefully this type of person can grab up awesome t-shirts at a low-cost!  University of Alabama shirts, whether long-sleeve or short will do the trick!

They are the tell-tale sign of what is really hanging inside the heart and thoughts of any student involved in college activities!  Wanting simplicity in life is as easy as buying something that turns the heads and minds of others into what you dream to achieve!  Cotton t-shirts and button-down shirts are great tools to master this academic task for each student who shows "spirit" or "enthusiasm" over and over.  Alabama apparel is also good for the college "newbie" to get used to shopping online and ordering books and re-selling them to create a small income!

Just watching everyone become fixated with your goals because of buying the right t-shirt, is almost just like a "fashion" miracle!  I'll take one!

Owning my Own Business

Guest post from: Constance Rodgers

When I opened my own business last year, I thought I’d covered all my bases. I knew that if I was going to make the jump from corporate job to owning a boutique, I needed to do it right. I had all the proper insurance in place, I had the right people to staff the store, and I had the correct business licenses that I needed. All was well for a while, and I’d never been happier…until my store was broken in to. Virtually in an instant, the entire inventory I’d worked so hard to curate was gone. Of course my insurance covered the damages, but it was so psychologically damaging that I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to get over it. I had spent countless hours picking out the perfect collection of things to showcase in my store, and all of it was gone in a flash. The only thing I could think over and over was that I should have listened to friends who advised I install a security system. Time has passed and I’ve gotten over the burglary for the most part, but I will not make the same mistake again. I called ADT security Services the day after the break-in and had a system installed immediately. Now I have the peace of mind I need to be able to keep running my business

A business with subway acess

I appreciate the guest post, Jewel Rodgers

I have always love, love, loved New York. Even when I was a kid and had never been there it held some sort of magical spell over my soul that drew me in like a Siren. I told my parents that when I got out of high school I was headed straight to New York City to live there forever. I would go to college of course but only if it was in or around NYC. After I graduated I started working for a fashion designer and learned a whole lot about the business. I decided to open my own boutique in the meat packing district which was a hot up and coming area at the time. One thing I knew that I needed was to be close to a subway stop. I remember when I was in school before I had money for cabs I would only shop at the stores that were a quick jaunt from a subway stop. I didn’t know that I would need awesome internet access like new york T1. I quickly found that this is maybe even more important than subway access.

Enjoying the 'class' and 'style' of school SPIRIT!

One way to bring out the appreciation and value of being in a school that has brought out the person you were meant to be; is to create your own unique style for it!  Having all of the attractive shirts, buttons, hats, scarves and other things can be a way to envelope hundreds of different looks from day to day.  University of Alabama shirts are so easy to acquire from their shopping website and fun to wear, just in case you attend your favorite teams' game or go out on the town with the party crowds!  It's nice to own a piece of school "luxury" that is thought of academically; and gives reference to the efforts it took to make the grade.
To "pump-up" the volume (or spirit of enthusiasm) on why being in college is one of the single-most valuable tools to achieve the maximum amount of greatness, can be represented in a fabulous style arrangement.  Alabama apparel has it going-on when it comes to finding and grabbing up all of the major gear that accompanies being in a school of that type of magnitude!  One thought about  getting your college look is finding the right t-shirt, hat or halter-top to go with your favorite jeans.  This is all possible, because making shopping for books, returned books or clothing gear is all over the websites of this scholastic university.  Make your life easier by looking great and sharing your ambition by showing it!

A modeling agency for "normal sized" women. Will it work? (a re-blog)

I’m 5’5” and a size 6, with a not-insignificant ass. I don’t see many models out there who look like me. In fact, very few women–no matter what their sizes–probably see themselves reflected in the ads we’re bombarded with every single day. There seem to be two distinct types of models–the traditional beanpole “straight size” fashion model, and the zaftig hourglass on the plus-size end of the spectrum.
When these two worlds collide, as they did recently in a controversial editorial that appeared in the online publication, PLUS Model Magazine (wherein a plus-size and straight size model were shown naked and embracing), one gets a sense of how emotionally charged this issue can be. Women on both sides of the scale’s needle feel attacked for being too big or too small. But what about those who fall somewhere in between?

Katie Halchishick, 26, has been working as a plus-size model since she was discovered at 17, being repped along the way by agencies like Wilhelmina and Ford. We caught up with Halchishick, who was recently featured on ABC News for her campaign “Healthy is the New Skinny,” to hear her story.
After being signed as a plus-size model as a teenager, Halchishick’s agency told her she could work more if she gained weight–and she obliged (unwittingly) by gaining the freshman 15–or 20 in her case–after starting at the School of Visual Arts in NYC. She hit a max of 200 pounds (size 14), and worked the most she ever would as a model, often banking six figures in a year. Then she met her boyfriend, who’s a physical trainer.
Halchishick ended up losing 50 pounds–and subsequently all her modeling clients–when she got down to 145 and a size 8. She was left with a few lingerie clients and doing commercials for diet pills. “As I got smaller I had to wear fat suits and padding, and that worked [keeping clients] for a while,” she told me. At this point her agency told her if she got down to a size 4, they could probably find her some commercial modeling work. Halchishick hated how she looked and felt, and is now holding steady somewhere in between her highest and lowest weight. And she’s now on a mission.

An 11-year old model--what's the story?

British fashion sites have been buzzing about a new face who is poised to take the modeling world by storm–some going as far as suggesting she may be the next Kate Moss. And at 11 years old, she’s one of the young ones. She also happens to be the offspring of rock royalty–and really, really pretty. We mentioned her in our news roundup yesterday, but here are some more details.

Anais Gallagher, who turns twelve in a couple of weeks, is the progeny of former Oasis member Noel Gallagher and his ex-wife Meg Matthews. It was Matthews’ proud tweet of a Mario Testino-lensed photo of her daughter that sent everyone into Anais Gallagher obsession. In fact, she tweeted the same photo twice in one day, which may be a little stage mom-ish, but we can hardly blame her–the photo (at left) is gorge.
Her only other modeling gig that we’ve been able to dig up was for Paul Smith, which you can see in the adorable video below (she’s the blond one with the striped shirt and yellow cardigan). But she’s already garnering Kate Moss comparisons–Sam Mcknight tweeted at Matthews “My God, Anais is a beauty. Move over KM!” And the Telegraph points out that Gallagher’s heart-shaped face is similar to Moss’ in the Testino photo. She may have some competition though.
Moss’ own 14-year old half-sister Lottie Moss, who recently started modeling, has been subject to the same comparison. However, Gallagher is practically part of the family. According to Grazia, Meg Matthews and Kate Moss are longtime friends and Gallagher has play dates with 9-year-old Lila Grace.
